Phencyclidine, also known as PCP or Angel Dust, is a hallucinogen that was first marketed as an anaesthetic during operations in the 1950s. It was withdrawn from the market because patients who received it became delirious and suffered from hallucinations. PCP is taken in the form of powder, capsules and tablets. The powder is either snorted or smoked after being mixed with marijuana or herbal substances. PCP is most commonly inhaled, but can also be taken intravenously, intranasally and orally. After small doses, the users' thinking and acting speeds up and mood swings from euphoria to depression occur. One of the most devastating effects of PCP is self-injury. PCP can be detected in urine within 4-6 hours after application. 6 PCP is excreted in the urine as an unaltered substance (4 % to 19 %) and as conjugated degradation products (25 % to 30 %).
