Cocaine is a potent stimulant of the central nervous system and a local anaesthetic. Initially it causes extreme energy and restlessness, while gradually it leads to tremors, hypersensitivity and cramps. In large quantities cocaine causes fever, breathing difficulties and unconsciousness. Cocaine is often taken by nasal inhalation, intravenous injection or by smoking the substance. It is excreted in urine mainly as benzoylecgonine. Benzoylecgonine has a longer biological half-life (5-8 hours) than cocaine (0.5-1.5 hours) and can usually be detected 24-48 hours after cocaine use.
